Embark on an unforgettable birding adventure to Reserva Chakana and Antisana National Park, home to the towering Antisana Volcano and a remarkable diversity of avian life.
This tour offers high-altitude birding, stunning landscapes, and close encounters with rare Andean species across varied habitats. —all within a short drive from Quito
Location & Overview:
- Highlights: High-altitude ecosystems, rare birds, and conservation highlights, offering a unique wildlife experience near Quito.
- Habitats: Highland Humid Forest, High-altitude Grassland/Páramo and High-altitude Lagoon.
- Location: Northeast Andes (~1.5 hours from Quito). Elevation ranges from 9,570 to 13,200 feet above sea level.
- Biodiversity: ~ 240 bird species, including the iconic Andean Condor (National Bird of Ecuador).
KEY BIRDING SPOTS:
1. Main entrance (Lava spill) to Antisana National Park
- Target birds: Red-crested Cotinga, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Andean Guan, Spectacled Redstart, Yellow-breasted Brushfinch, Tufted Tit-Tyrant and much more.
2. Reserva Chakana-Mirador del Cóndor andino (Andean Condor Lookout)
- Close-up Andean Condor sightings.
- Target birds: Andean Condor, Ecuadorian Hillstar, Paramo Pipit, Tawny Antpitta, Black-billed Shrike-Tyrant, Variable Hawk.
3. Antisana National Park General Area
- Target birds: Andean Ibis, Carunculated Caracara, Many-striped and Streak-backed Canastero, Stout-billed and Chestnut-winged Cinclodes, Andean Tit-Spinetail, Andean Lapwing and others.
4. La Mica Lagoon
- Target birds: Silvery Grebe, Andean Duck, Andean Teal, Slate-colored Coot, Yellow-billed Pintail, Andean Gull and others.
5. Tambo Condor
- Hummingbird hotspot: Giant Hummingbird, Sparkling Violetear, Great Sapphirewing, Shinning Sunbeam, Tyrian Metaltail.

By late afternoon, you’ll be transported back to your hotel or the airport in Quito, concluding your birding expedition.
Tour Logistics:
- 6:00 AM pick-up from Quito hotel/airport
- Late afternoon drop-off in Quito.
Recommended Gear
- Warm layers (mornings are cold at high elevation).
- Binoculars & camera (hummingbirds, toucans and tanagers are a highlight!).
- Waterproof gear (highland weather can change quickly).
- Sunscreen, hat and wool hat.
