FULL DAY MITAD DEL MUNDO & PULULAHUA CRATER BIRDING TOUR

This birding itinerary in Mitad del Mundo and Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve offers a fantastic contrast between dry shrubland and temperate humid forest habitats, providing a diverse birding experience just outside Quito.
Location & Overview:
- Highlights: Located north of Quito, in the Interandean Valley on the Equatorial line. From arid-adapted birds to lush cloud forest specialists in one short trip. Nearby Mitad del Mundo, part of Ecuador’s National Protected Area System and easy day trip with high biodiversity payoff.
- Habitats: Rain-shadowed thorny scrubs forest and Andean agaves (cool and drier). Volcanic crater with tall temperate cloud forest (cool, humid) and scrubby forest (warmer, drier microclimate).
- Location: Northwest Andes (~1 hour from Quito). Elevation ranges from 8500 to 9200 feet above sea level.
- Biodiversity: ~ 250 bird species
KEY BIRDING SPOTS:
1. Horse racetrak Calacalí
- Target birds: Streak-backed Canastero, White-tailed Shrike-Tyrant, Purple-collared Woodstar, Blue and Yellow Tanager, Band-tailed Sierra Finch, Common Ground Dove, Ash-breasted Sierra Finch, Tufted Tit Tyrant, Golden-rumped Euphonia, Black-tailed Trainbearer and many others.
2. Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve
- Target birds: Hooded Mountain Tanager, Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager, Red-crested Cotinga, Sapphire-vented Puffleg, Plain-tailed Wren, Green-tailed Trainbearer, Andean Guan, Leimebamba Antpitta, Pearled Treerunner, Rufous-chested Tanager, White-tailed Tyrannulet, Brown-capped Vireo and many others.

By late afternoon, you’ll be transported back to your hotel or the airport in Quito, concluding your birding expedition.
Tour Logistics:
- 6:00 AM pick-up from Quito hotel/airport
- Late afternoon drop-off in Quito.

- Warm layers (mornings are cold at high elevation).

- Waterproof gear (highland weather can change quickly).
